Does anyone know if this is replaceable? It appears to be a pretty easy area to get to (2WD). There is a seal at the top around the steering shaft. Found fluid leaking out of the top of the steering gear tower. Cleaned everything spotless, ran the truck while turning the wheels back and forth while checking for leaks. Steering gear leak! My 94 dakota was leaking PS fluid down by the gear. I wonder, should I mess with the installation andĭo the tie rod disconnect, etc? to save $500?

Of hiring a pro to do the job but estimates are almost 1,000. The power steering gear is about $300 and the installation looks somewhat involved I am thinking It seems there is still a leek, from the power steering gear(box)that originates from behind it.I can't really see. It drips off theĪxle on the drivers side, but recently I found that it would leak out nearly as fast as I put it I have a 1995 v6 that has been leaking power steering fluid for a long time. What is the significance of a squealing noise when i'm turning sharply at low speeds?
Good to know, i'll add it to my list of maintenance items. Then I ended up going through 3 pep-boys pumps till I got a good one. I had this happen on my 88 Dakota and I replaced the entire pump, only to find out it was o-rings. Next would be to check your hoses, clean them! Get some 409 or Purple Muscle or something. First step is CLEAN IT! There is a cheap o-ring set you can pick up at napa and replace your self by pulling the pump and replacing them. OldMan, any number of things could be leaking. Never ever under any circumstances use something to seal leaks like that, you'll seal more than just the leak. Anyway I checked it out to be relatively expensive, but at a parts house I have seen fluids that guarentee no steering leaks for under $10. We got him to replace it free since it was supposedly fine "AS-IS".

The covers were torn and it was a slow leak (about 2 days from full to empty). The chunk or whatever it is called that uses the fluid and power steering pump to turn the wheels(it runs from wheel to wheel) was bad.
When I bought mine w/120k it was low on fluid and the salesman said it just needed to be filled. So that hose is cracked? How much is the part? the bottom one is more likely to start leaking first. there are two hoses (that i know of) on the P.S. Is there anywhere in particular that I should consider the source of this leak? There are no large spots on the ground under the truck, and since the engine bay has been sprayed with diesel oil, its hard to spot a leak there. I fill it up to the bottom of the two rungs like it says, and the next time I check it (a week or so later) its down again. My problem is the power steering fluid is often low. I'm a newbie to my 91 Dak but i'm learning day by day.
